Chevrolet Cuts Spark EV from its Lineup

Now that the Chevrolet Bolt EV is ramping up for a nationwide release, its time to send Chevys previous electric car, the Spark EV, off to Electric Valhalla. The Bolt EV goes on sale throughout 2017, with a release schedule that sees certain states receiving models ahead of others. LG Chem supplies the batteries for both the Volt and Bolt EV, as well. The Bolt EV will take up the mantle, replacing the "compliance car" with something available in all 50 states. Those states require a certain percentage of zero-emissions vehicle sales, and the Spark EV helped bolster that.

Chevrolet ends production of the Spark EV now that the Bolt EV is out

Chevrolet is putting its electrified bets on the Bolt EV, as the company announced today that its ending producti on of the Spark EV, the compact car with a relatively meager 82 miles of electric range. The Spark EV was only sold in three states, and Chevrolet told Detroit News that it sold only around 7,400 of them in total since its introduction in 2013. Chevrolets Bolt EV is a much bigger bet on electric cars, but the companys decision to part ways with the Spark EV shows its not interested in keeping EVs around just for the sake of having some in the lineup. The decision to end production of the car likely has a lot to do with the Bolt EVs much more attractive options, which include 238 miles of EPA rated range. Watching Bolts performance will be big not only for the future of Chevrolets electric car program, but for those of all automakers, since all eyes are on Chevrolets first attempt at a long-range, affordable consumer electric mass market vehicle.




The Chevrolet Spark EV has been officially axed from the automakers lineup, ending a U.S. sales run that spanned over three years. The automaker has also removed the Spark EV from its consumer website, leaving the Bolt EV as Chevys only electric vehicle in its lineup. The 2016 Chevrolet Spark EV was rated at 140 hp and a whopping 400 lb-ft of torque driving the front wheels. When General Motors unveiled the Bolt EV back in 2015, the company said it didnt intend on cancelling the Spark EV, The Detroit News reports. With a 19- kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the Spark EV was EPA rated to travel approximately 82 miles in betw een charges.

Chevrolet Announces N ew Medium-Duty Commercial Truck

Chevrolet announced Friday that it is adding a new low cab forward medium-duty commercial truck that is expected to be available by the end of the year. This news comes after Chevrolet announced in 2016 that it was returning to the medium-duty truck market and would offer six low cab forward medium-duty trucks through a GM-Isuzu partnership. The company will introduce its new offering at the NTEA Work Truck Show next week in Indianapolis. The medium-duty truck has a maximum GVWR of 25,950 pounds. The trucks will be built at the companys assembly plant in Charlotte, Mich., where the other low cab forward trucks are made, as well as in Japan.


As part of its continuing effort to grow its commercial vehicle lineup, Chevrolet is announcing the availability of a new 6500XD model to its Low Cab Forward medium-duty lineup . The truck has a maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 25,950 pounds, a front axle rating of 12,000 pounds, and a rear axle rating of 19,000 pounds. The 6500XD will be available at Chevrolet Commercial dealers by the end of 2017. The cabover truck comes ahead of the forthcoming medium-duty conventional cab truck being codeveloped with Navistar, expected to come to market in 2018. The truck has a dock-height chassis, is available in eight wheelbase configurations, and can accommodate bodies up to 30 feet in length.

Germany moves closer to hydrogen vehicle growth

The goal of having hydrogen as an alternative fuel widely available in Germany came a little closer recently when two new hydrogen fuel facilities were opened at filling stations in Frankfurt and Weisbaden, writes Brian Byrne.

In a scheme to which the German government has contributed €1.6m, this brings to 30 the number of such facilities in Germany. It is planned have a network of 400 such stations by 2023.

The programme is being implemented in a joint venture by H2 Mobility Deutschland and its partners Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde and Shell.

The hydrogen is used in fuel-cell powered cars, which emit no greenhouse gases and have electric mo tors using electricity produced by the FC system.
