This is the car That People in the 1970s Predicted we Would Be driving in the year 00. Fifteen Years After the turn of the millennium, the BMW i8 is the Machine That BMW looks like no --other - and like no --other Certainly because on the road. Its gasoline and plug-in electric powertrain compliment ict looks, Bringing together the efficiency of an electric car and the convenience of an internal combustion engine.
Purpose there is a lot more t o Understand about what the BMW i8 is and is not. Is it an exotic supercar? Or is it a dream of the environmentally minded automotive enthusiast? Or is it something else Altogether? Could this be the one vehicle qui We Can not Currently classify? Or is it all of These things?
Has the future finally arrived?
Its looks alone draw the focus of everyone on the road. Pedestrians gawk. Other drivers wave or honk-even. Some yell out compliments. When parked, crowds gather, pictures are taken. Bros shower it with awe. Ten-year-old boys spew out icts specs. Everyone Asks to open the doors. Women sccm more reserved, quietly judging the car and then its driver. (Except That One mid-twenties woman who, after-a quick chat That divulged her knowledge of all things cars, ditched her man, jumped into the passenger seat, and Was ready to go Wherever I Was going.) Two Jamaican guys Explained to me That BMW really means clustering Bob Marley and the Wailers . Most people HAD no idea what it is intended They Knew It was special. . Potential i8 buyers shoulds Know That all this care gets old really Quickly

Pop up the door, up your butt on the wide door sill and slide into the seat - practice makes you a superhero. Once inside, the interior Seems intimidating at first, purpose Within a Few Minutes to-any modern BMW Similarities can be seen. In fact, I have not Noticed Any features in this because That can not be HAD was common yuppie enthusiast-leased 335i. Visibility is shockingly good for a mid-engine car. There are small jump seats in the back, qui my seven year old daughter loved as She Could see out and no one Could See her. Much like the Audi R8 or the Acura NSX, and Unlike Any Ferrari, everything about using this as as a car is normal shockingly and drama free.
In the middle of this vehicle is a three cylinder, 1.5-liter turbocharged engine That Produces 228 horsepower while inhaling air at 22 psi. Next to it is a tiny electric motor That Produces eleven horsepower and is mostly used to start the engine and mask the turbo lag. It can be thought of as an electric supercharger. Those two send the power to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Reviews another is up front electric motor That Produces 129 horsepower and ict Sends power to the wheels via a forehead two-speed transmission. Combined, this gadgetry Produces 357 horsepower, sure which as heck Does not sccm like a lot for a mid-engine d exotic in the days of 707-horsepower family sedans.

It is my suspicion, HOWEVER, That BMW wants you to think of ict powerplant as a black box. The front clam-shell can not be anyone --other ouvert by a factory trained technician. The rear engine can be accessed through the rear hatch, except it really can not. Underneath what looks like an engine cover is qui Reviews another engine cover is secured with Allen bolts. I can not recall Any Other vehicle in the engine qui Was completely Call sealed off. Even the 911 allows you to see share of the intake manifold
Instead, BMW wants you to focus on are the three main driving modes: eDrive, Also Known As electric;. Comfort, Also Known As normal; and Sport, Also Known As faster than Comfort. In eDrive, the i8 is a front-wheel-drive electric car. In Comfort, its an all-wheel-drive car with Either the gasoline engine and / or the electric motors propelling the vehicle forward. In Sport mode, the three-banger is working full-time, the transmission shifts into forehead Reviews another gear, and the rear transmission stays in gear longer. All of this is accompagné by a concert of noises never heard before from one car; the i8 quietly whistles, whines, and snorts, all Sami at the time.
The EP A rates the i8 for 28 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, for a combined 28 mpg rating. That May not sound impressive Because It Does not take into account the 76 PGME rating, qui is the distance a vehicle can travel in electric fashion using the amount of energy contained in one gallon of gasoline. The i8 can travel up to fifteen miles in eDrive with a fully charged battery, purpose That Is Where I ran into a problem.
I live in a downtown Boston high-rise building Where Each car parking spot is privately owned. There are no changing stations or outlets available, so I Was not reliable to load the car there. Yes, there are charging stations, aim They required me to park Either it was downtown street - qui I never do with press cars - or pay an exuberant amount of money for a night of parking lot mile from my home. Neither of thesis Was a viable option for me, so I relied on the battery charged through regenerative braking Being and the three-banger. My driving Was li mited to heavy city traffic or sensitive hooning, nothing in between. My result Was a computer-Indicated 27.4 mpg, qui I thought was pretty good Given the Circumstances. If I had access to a charging station, I would-have no issue driving to work and back in Purely electric mode.

The i8 is made of a plastic-reinforced carbon fiber qui tub sits atop an aluminum alloy frame, with Some magnesium thrown in here and there. There are parts of the Body That Were intentionally left unfinished or unpainted qui look like a mix of fiberglass and carbon-fiber. The batteries are qui Located in what Could Be Described as the transmission / driveshaft tunnel was typical because, along with the motors, are the heavy parts. The curb weight of the i8 is 3,455 pounds, the bulk of qui is Located Just a few inches from the ground.
On paper, with 357 horsepower and at 3,455 pounds, the BMW i8 Does not sccm All That impressive . Yet, in street driving, its like nothing else I have ever driven, mostly due to the massive amount of torque Instantly Available That Is. The total sum of torque the i8s black box, derived by Formulae Some highly complex, is 420 lb-ft at Some irrelevant engi ne speed. This is what the driver and passenger feel and its the i8 What Gives the sense of fast . Be it from the electric, conventional, or Both motors, the power is always there; there are no dead spots, no waiting for boost to build, no ridiculously high redlines. Quietly and smoothly, pinning ict Their occupants to seats, the BMW i8 just goes.

In a sense, That Is Where the i8 Does not make sense Any. The common metrics we associate with performance do not recounts the Same Way to the i8. On paper, the i8 May not be faster than a Porsche 911, purpose is sure as heck feels faster. Any hybrid Neither, nor Any vehicle with a three-cylinder engine, is Supposed to be this fast. Its worth Noting the Obvious: In addition to Being fast, the i8 is very much a drivers car. Handling and feedback through the frame is typical of sporty BMWs, That Is to say with great and one by the Audi R8.
One May Think que la i8 is the new M1, it is not intended. A quick glance inside will reveal That its not an M car at all. The seats are supportive and not as the various adjustments Lack of the amazing seats That come in every BMW M car. There is no M anything; No. M modes, No. M buttons. Even the tires, while perfectly suited for the street, and not at all objectionable in casual hooning, are not worthy of a crapcan racer (note: this vehicle Had the Sportier 215mm and 245mm wide tires). The i8 is fast, It Does everything well, aim its not something anyone Would do a track day in, and The Therefore it is not an M car.

What the i8 shares with the iconic M1 is That Both vehicles mark the start of new era for the BMW brand. The M1 started a line of fantastic performance, yet functional, vehicles. The i8 is here To Prove That electric and efficient Does not mean boring and slow. None Of That stuff about the engine, the motors, the batteries and the power distribution matters. Here is a Machine from the future and it is in a black box That Makes it go. Its stunning, its fast, and its green.
The future is now.

For those of you who have not been keep track, I am now a little over a quarter of the way through my 24 months lease Fiesta ST. It is hard to believe that I had the car that long, but it is true. I just clicked past the mark of six thousand mile on the odometer, and Im about to make the payment number seven, so I drive a little less than what I allowed my lease. That said, Ive driven m ore than double the number of miles I put on my Boss 302 during the same period.
As I was driving to Ohio this week My Old Kentucky Home, chew the hills I-75 North Road between Lexington and the Greater Cincinnati, a terrible thought came to me:
In just about seventeen months, Ill have to give back his fist, and I do not want.
You see, as I mentioned above, the boss just does not much work today. I even put some new BF Goodrich Comp-2 tires on this summer with hopes of making a few track days (or, Gd forbid, autocrossing), but they are still almost new sticker. Except for picking up school kids, the boss has been relegated to that special Wowzers Limited Editions Mustangs do best :. Sitting in the garage and the appreciation of the value
Why, you may ask? Simple. The Fiesta has proved to be a better car. Ridiculous, you say (or even "Ludacris")? Not really. The Fiesta is not less pleasure in daily driving duty 302. You can not drive the 302 a lot faster than you ST on public roads without endangering a careless driving citation can. My most recent appearance on the podcast of smoking tires, Thad and Chris and I all agree - there is no better car on the dollar Fist. On a California canyon road track or a Kentucky Bourbon Trail race, there are not many cars that show their taillights Fiesta, and those who make more than double its sticker price. I just do not understand why anyone looking to have a cheap fun car would buy something else. The Focus ST could have better performance figures, but it does not match the Fiesta for the pleasure of pure conduct.
Second, it is much, much more practical for everyday use than the Mustang. It costs much less to operate (with fuel mileage is about 50 percent better), it is much easier to get the kids in and out, and, perhaps most importantly, it causes not every single redneck in a pickup in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to challenge me to Rolls For ty on the highway. Its no secret that I like a little attention on the road, but there are days when you do not want to deal with children hanging out passenger windows of their cars that try to Instagram your pony car bright yellow.
Finally, I desperately, madly love, and perhaps irrationally it. I waaaaaaaay outside the target demo for this car, the two generations and economically, but I feel good when I drive. It puts a smile a mile wide on my face every time, and there is simply no good way to measure it. I hate it when books buff put some totally subjective stars as "Fun Factor" or "Gotta Have It" notes in car reviews, but my little Blue Oval product would mark a solid ten in some qualitative note you want to give it. Its a fucking hoot.
However, in addition to the inevitable date of the end of the lease, there are two specters looming on the presence of the Fist in my driveway (yes, I have a three-car garage, and no, there is no room for the little Fiesta th is could in it, thanks to my growing collection of toys children), and they are both going to be made by Ford Performance
Number Specter One :. the Shelby GT350. Yes, I realize that buying a GT350 would be well enough to go in direct opposition to all the comments I just made about the Fiesta against the boss. But man, this engine. This beautiful, flat crank high mounted V-8 plan. And the sticker price - it is actually cheaper than the Boss 302 was considering inflation. But Im pretty sure I break computers Experian if I tried to get a loan for the GT350 while keeping the Boss and Fist, which means that one of them must go. And as much as I love Fist, I do not really know if I could take on the boss. Yes, I know that the GT350 and the boss would both serve the same non-functional role in my garage ... fudge; even if I can not make a rational case for maintaining the Boss and purchasing a GT350. Okay, so in this scenario, Fist rest and the boss will - assuming I can even fin d a GT350 to buy. Fine
However ...
Specter Number Two :. The Focus RS. Yes, this is actually the real threat to the Fist. I do not need two hot hatches, and there is no doubt that, as Matt Farah said in our podcast, which you would know if you follow me on Cyber ââDust, "There is no way Ford can kiss (Focus RS) up. "it will be remarkable. It will have a launch impious. It will also be convenient that the Fiesta is - in fact more. All that said, the price will be decidedly non-Fist-ish. If it checks in at about the same price as its competitors (Golf R WRX STI), then we are talking about 40k - or almost two fists. Ugh. I do not need another car payment that exceeds $ 0 per month. Okay, so in this scenario, the boss will and have two Ford hatchbacks? Well, it makes no sense at all. Hmm. I think I have to think about it some more.
Anyway, in any and all scenarios, it seems the Fist has more than proven the viability of his term in my stable. This means th at Im serious sad that I have to return it when Im done with it. I know I could buy the car at the end of the lease, but it just would not be very Barkish. In addition, there are attractive tax implications involved in a lease when trying to find a way to get rid of some pesky 1099 revenues. Hypothetically, that is. So when its time for Zippy (whats his name, by the way) to go to the big Car Lot In The Sky, a new lease is much more likely to purchase.
Unlike Chris and Thad TST, I plan to do exactly no changes to mine, apart from some brake pads upgraded. This means that in February 2017, some lucky B & Ber can head to a Ford store and get a hand in peace with approximately 20K on the clock for a good ridiculous price. And Ill be much better to have borrowed its future owner a little time, and worse for not having the coil until turbo again.

The Americans have spoken with their wallets and we can, for the most forget minivans. Consumers accept the loss of a large part of the practice and the flexibility of an MPV as long as their new vehicle still prov ides three rows of seats and gaining a measure of all time utility.
⢠US Market Price As Tested: $ 41,545
⢠Power: 20 @ 6400 rpm
⢠torque: 252 lb-ft at 50 rpm
⢠observed fuel economy: 18.8 mpg
the piece : Hyundai Santa Fe, which is ostensibly a second generation Hyundai Veracruz, a vehicle that has come over a three-row crossover vans to kill as misnamed own entourage Hyundai, which does not really have an entourage of any kind. Not next to talk about everything.
Oh, there are still minivans. In 2015, Toyota will likely sell more than 150,000 Sienna in America for the first time since 06. But the total minivan volume is down 12% through the first quarter of 2015 and minivans represented only 3 4% of the total US vehicle sales in calendar year 2014, against 6.5% a decade ago.
Maybe you have de cided that a minivan is not necessary, but youre not willing to lose any practicality. You ask, "How much flexibility seats do I need" For those who say: "Not that much, actually?" Hyundai has a solution. Take seven most places Santa Fe, not Santa Fe Sport, and allow passengers to bask in the space created by the removal of a center seat row.

Inside Santa Fe, we will now move away far enough minivan for eight passengers and their relatives-40 cubic feet of space behind the third row - Santa Fe has 13.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third row - but we re also dealing with a much smaller overall vehicle. The Santa Fe is seven inches shorter, bumper to bumper, a 2015 Toyota Sienna, four inches narrower, and two inches less on the roof. Compared to a top-trim AWD Sienna, the Santa Fe is 650 pounds lighter, as well.
Accordingly, we also have moved away from the days when fans denounced ess vee you- because, in part, "minivans are so much more carlike." Certainly the Santa Fe is a great cross with a suspension adjustment comfort of mind, but there is no bus. Even compared to improved 2015 Sienna minivan many of Americas best-selling so far this year, the Santa Fe behavior of road is much greater. You buy either vehicle to film a hearin g for 8 Furious, but if you are in sudden need of an agitation of rural roads, this prototypical successor SUV old is definitely the one Id take.

And not just because the Santa Fe simply not mismanaged. Frankly, the 3.3L, 20 horsepower V6 feels t ruly powerful in Santa Fe.
Throttle tip-in is measured, the acceleration is lively, the couple is always ready, and automatic recognition 6 speed does his work as an automatic transmission should :. in failing to draw any attention to herself
observed fuel economy of 19 mpg in a mix of city and highway driving was tied with the official combined figure EPA, but would have been better if I seek satisfaction in the act of hurling the road to Santa Fe down the ramps.
not unpleasant to drive away then, but the time spent inside the Santa Fe enjoyable? Lent to us for a week in April by Hyundai Canada, it is in Canadian-speak, a $ 45K XL Santa Fe Limited, equivalent to US $ 41,545 to a Santa Fe Limited with the package $ 4650 Ultimate. (Santa Fes start to $ 31,045 in the US All-wheel drive adds $ 1.750.)

proximity access, panoramic opening, heated steering wheels, heated rear seats, seats ventilated front, two-position memory seats, power liftgate and tend to change the verdicts in the automotive world examiner. Indeed, Hyundai predictable load function does not hurt. But I liked the interior of Santa Fe more because of the siege of six using the appropriate space the tailgate handsfree 19-inch alloys, leather seats, or (which never works for me anyway. ) the third line is far from large, but there is room for adult feet under the second-row seats, there are separate climate controls, and access to the third row is easier with away from the midline. The two seats in the second row can be moved forward a couple of inches without sacrificing the ability to stretch out and get comfortable. For the little people, the waistline is too high for the scenic pleasure, but then again if you paid enough room, your children can scan the sky through the glass roof.
A minivan buyer who is examining a Santa Fe, or vice versa, may not be as interested in the version of the Hyundai six places. But for consumers who do not require the capacity of seven seats, the withdrawal of the seat makes a big difference in how people live and move and extend rear parents.

However, if the Santa Fe is not a minivan alternative, what about more direct rivals? I would take interior of the Toyota Highlander (and its shelf life at the front), the 2016 Honda Pilot spac e behind the third row, the Mazda CX-9 on a winding road, the smooth operation of the second row of the Nissan Pathfinder and the exterior styling of the Dodge Durango and Ford Flex. In some areas, there are three crosses lines that surpass the Hyundai. But in 2015 Santa Fe is a vehicle difficult to fault, especially because of its engine and the value weve come to expect from Hyundai, particularly in the lower trim levels.
Just do not assume that it is quite the family -friendly like a minivan. None of these crosses can pull this trick.
