The Ford Edge has always grabbed my attention because of his style
by far the look -. particularly that of the edge of the second generation - is certainly pleasing to the eye. The grille, assembly fog lamps, stylish wheels and a beautiful silhouette give the midsize crossover Edge - pardon the p un. And the 2016 model can be configured in a number of ways to meet consumer needs, with a choice of powertrains and a good choice of optional equipment.
But, as they say, the devil is in the details, and this is Edge begins to lose sharpness. The main problem is that we have seen here before: the goodness of fit of the outer panels of the Edge. However, I have another major criticism about mobile lifestyle Blue Oval, and it is under the hood misaligned.
The Edge has three engine options. The top-spec Sport has its own engine - a 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost. Other trims can be had with a twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4 or V6 3.5 liter option. Our tester came with the turbo four.
The 2.0-liter engine in the Ruby Red model delivers 245 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. The V6, however, delivers 280 hp at 6500 rpm and 250 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.
2.0 liter turbocharged leaves me feeling torn. I know exactly why Ford EcoBoost engines builds, but I want more oomph in my training. Despite the power figures, the Edge feels slow. This is espe cially true when it comes to off-the-line acceleration thanks to turbo lag.
The EcoBoost mill does not deliver on its promised fuel economy, either. Fuel consumption is estimated is 20 mpg city and 30 mpg on the highway for a combined 24 mpg, according to the test of five cycles of the Environmental Protection Agency. After a week of homogeneous city and highway driving, my average came out to 21 mpg - a bit disappointing
On the other hand, there is no perceptible lag between shifts something Ive noticed is too frequent. Ford vehicles. SelectShift automatic six-speed with paddle shifters performs very well, although I do not touch the pallets once during my time with the Edge.
Despite the problems with the sometimes slow motor performance, general driving sensation Edge is quite smooth and comfortable.
now, about the quality problems I alluded to earlier about the Edge.
last year of CAPD own editor considered Edge 2015 and reported similar problems with mounting body panel. He alluded to perhaps some of the issues to do with the extensive redesign of the model had undergone, and Edge was in his first year with a new look. Some questions were waiting, he wrote.
Unfortunately, the questions seem to remain outstanding on the 2016 model we drove. From a distance, all on the edge looks great. A closer look, however, tells a different story.
First, the pickling time on the rear passenger door of our tester came almost completely separated from the door. Although it was easy to put it in place, which should not happen. The chrome trim on the doors is misaligned trim matched with the body, and the panels around the rear lights also do not align.
Unfortunately, the problems appear to date back even further. a neighbor in 2010 Bord also has some editing panel and alignment problems.
It is a little disconcerting that these issues continue to arise on a vehicle that costs nearly $ 50,000.
The week after the Edge I drove a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk cheaper. Inspect the mounting panel and alignment revealed a better finish. (And the Trailhawk was a pretty fun drive.)
Fortunately, Edge has other redeeming qualities, especially inside, where the finish is greatly improved compared to the outside.
cabin is a quiet, except of fspring screaming in the back seat. At highway speeds, the road noise and wind is minimized, making the board a pleasant place to be.
Speaking of the back seat, there are loads of leg and shoulder for passengers. And even when you install a car seat, there is no need for the front passenger to take their seats far forward that their knees are crushed against the dashboard.
The cabin is particularly bright thanks to panoramic sunroof Edge, a feature that certainly please the little that arrive to watch the sun during the disks or stars that count trying to lull. Watching the sun visor roller back and forth also provides entertainment and laughter of youngins, so that is a plus.
The two-tone interior leather (ceramic / black) gives the cabin a more upmarket feel, as does the satin plastic trim throughout the cabin. The color of the light remains bright cabin, and is a welcome change from the sea of ââfabrics and materials that we find so often in vehicles these dark days.
From behind the wheel, Edge has clear sight lines and a comfortable sitting position.
The 2016 Edge offers SYNC3, impr oved Ford system, which proves to be a pleasant surprise. Previous experience with SYNC have left me wanting, but SYNC3 easy to use and I can report, glitch free. Color me impressed.
The Edge offers a spacious cargo area, perfect to pack along the harness that comes with parenting. But given that my neighbor does with his Edge, he is also quite capable of acting as a utility vehicle for a DJ, providing plenty of room for big speakers and other devices.
Price for Edge starts at $ 28.700 (US), but titanium tester reaches $ 46,665. Added options include Equipment Group 302A ($ 5,495), Drivers Package ($ 1,800), 20-inch wheels ($ 995), Class II Trailer Tow Package ($ 435) and an additional $ 395 for painting tri- Ruby Red metallic layer.
Although there are concerns about the quality of the Edge, that the group of six Edge gaps on my neighbor has not worsened over time leads me to believe that it can not be a long term issue. So if you can live with the imperfections, by all means, the Edge is a good choice.
Id probably opt for the larger V6 engine, but I guess you get used to more 2.0-liter EcoBoost, the m ore comfortable you will be with the smaller mill.
Ford Canada provided the vehicle and insurance for the purpose of this review.
